Local artist, Orlando Garrido will be one of
more than 75 talented artists featured in Art for the People, a traveling
art exhibition being held in Belize this year. The Image Factory Art
Foundation (IFAF) is presenting this one-of-a-kind exhibit which runs the
entire year 2000. They are a non-profit art institute dedicated to the
documentation, promotion and exhibition of culture in Belize. Focusing on
contemporary art locally and internationally, the Image Factory also
presents exhibitions and displays of a wider range involving social
history, archaeology and anthropology.
Orlando Garrido, who displays his works in San Pedro
at Belizean Arts, grew up among the Garifuna in the Stann Creek District.
He expresses his love of the Garifuna culture and
rich heritage in
colorful portrayals of the Garinagu music, dances and rituals on canvas.
His paintings are also inspired by the abundant wildlife and natural
environment found in beautiful Belize. Mr. Garrido is the only artist
featured from San Pedro so far and is honored to be a part of this
cultural exhibit. He will be featuring sample works from a variety of the
exhibiting artists, this week only, at Mata Chica Resort, on the north
end of Ambergris Caye.
Art for the People had its official
opening reception last Friday, but will be shown partially at the House
of Culture and the Image Factory Art Gallery, in Belize City until
February 25th.
It will then travel to all the districts starting in March at Belmopan;
April in San Ignacio and Benque Viejo del Carmen; May in Orange Walk
Town; August in Corozal Town; September/October in Punta Gorda, San Pedro
Colombia/San Antonio; November in Dangriga and finishing up the year,
December in San Pedro Town.
