, St. Matthew's University School of
Medicine was served with a notice to vacate the premises by Sea Breeze Limited.
An undisclosed "business matter" was allegedly the reason given for the
eviction. St. Matthew's must vacate the land by August 31,
2001. In an interview with Interim President B.D. Owens,
he stated the school will remain in San Pedro. He added he was uncertain as to
the reason for the eviction, since his role at St. Matthew's is strictly
academic, but plans are to relocate buildings to the acreage dedicated in the
recent groundbreaking; the land allocated for the expansion of the school. Dr.
Owens mentioned that this was already the plan, but it would need to happen just
a little sooner now. This land, he stated, is being procured on a lease/purchase
plan.
Questioned about the effects on students and
classes, Dr. Owens continued there will be no interruption of classes during the
move. He explained the school was meeting with contractors last Tuesday to
discuss this "smooth transition".
