As Ambergris Caye continues to grow, careful
planning is necessary to ensure its proper development. In order to maintain its
charm and island appeal to visitors and investors, appropriate measures must be
taken. The housing and planning committee was established in San Pedro to review
applications for proposed construction and to make certain that building codes
and construction plans are adhered to. This week, we are pleased to introduce
the two men who look after the daily affairs of the Ambergris Caye Planning
Office - Pablo Borges and Pablo Sosa. Pablo Borges
was born in San Pedro on December 27th, 1976 to Margarita and Jose Borges. He
attended San Pedro Roman Catholic School and San Pedro High School, graduating
as a commercial student in 1995. Always a hardworking young man, Pablo worked as
a part-time cashier while still attending high school. Immediately after
graduation he was hired as a full-time cashier, a job he kept for four and a
half years. On December 11 th, 1999 Pablo married Vanessa Barela of
Orange Walk District. Their union produced two beautiful children: Naim and
Josue. After his wedding, Pablo and his wife moved to Orange Walk for eight
months so he could learn more about her birthplace. In
March of 2000, Pablo was hired as the office clerk for the Ambergris Caye
Planning Office. Since then he has performed many duties that include filing,
record keeping and assisting with the daily transactions of the office. "I urge
the community to visit our office to find out more about the laws and
regulations regarding housing," stated Mr. Borges. "I am happy to work with such
a committed group who work together to achieve the best decisions for the growth
of San Pedro," ended Pablo. Although he is devoted to his
job, Pablo is well known in San Pedro for his athletic skills when it comes to
soccer. Since his primary school days, soccer has been Pablo's passion. At the
age of 15, he began playing professional soccer with the San Pedro Football
Club. He started as a midfielder and eventually moved to right wing defense for
both the San Pedro Dolphins and Ambergris Caye Turquoise. In speaking of his
sport Pablo commented, "I enjoy soccer immensely. The traveling and friendships
made are priceless, plus the excitement of the cheering fans is
self-rewarding." Pablo Sosa was born
and raised in "Sugar City," Orange Walk on December 29 th, 1974 to Teodora Garcia and Jesus Sosa.
Growing up, Pablo was enrolled at La Immaculada Elementary School and then
completed one year at Technical High School. Unfortunately, a lack of financial
resources forced Pablo to drop out of secondary school and go in search of a
job. For two and a half years he was employed at a bakery in Orange Walk before
moving to Belize City where he worked as a conductor for Batty Brothers Bus
Services for two years. While residing in Belize City,
Pablo and a friend decided to move to San Pedro to try their luck. What was
supposed to be a trip of only a few days turned out to be a permanent stay for
Pablo. "I was immediately impressed by the beauty of the island, the
friendliness of the people and the lifestyle here, so I decided to stay for
good," said Pablo. In San Pedro, Pablo went to work for the SunBreeze Hotel as
part of their maintenance team. After two years, he decided to move on and tried
his skills at construction. Pablo says this is where he developed an interest in
the proper planning of buildings. In 1999, when he was offered a job at the
Ambergris Caye Planning Office, he accepted with much enthusiasm. As time went
by and this department became more organized, Mr. Sosa was promoted to building
inspector. Apart from the day-to-day tasks required by this department, Pablo
Sosa is also responsible for performing site inspections before and during the
construction of buildings in San Pedro. A devout
Christian, Pablo Sosa says that since August of 1999 he has dedicated his life
to Jesus Christ and invites others to do the same. During his spare time, Pablo
enjoys studying the Bible. Both Pablo Borges and Pablo
Sosa continue to grow along with the progress of the island. Ambergris Caye can
count on these two men to do their best when it comes to ensuring the proper
planning of the island, and enforcing the responsible development of "Our
Community."
